Oak Harbor Lions announce winners in Peace Poster Contest
Cooper Hicks, an eighth grade student at Oak Harbor Middle School, created the winning entry in the 24th annual Peace Poster Contest sponsored by the Oak Harbor Lions Club. Cooper was recognized for his achievement at an assembly held at the school on December 16. His poster was sent to compete against other local winners at the district level. The theme of this year’s contest was “Children Know Peace.” It is estimated that more than 375,000 entries were submitted worldwide. Lions Club International sponsors the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. Representing the Lions Club, Chris Detray recognized middle school art instructor Joe Bergman for his assistance with this year’s contest.
Second place was awarded to Quinn Bodnar and third place, to Kyle Pape. Honorable mention prizes were given to Jared Krieger, Shelbie Tabbert and Tessa Tyburski. A panel of judges from the Oak Harbor Lions selected the award-winning posters for their originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme.
Lion President John Crosser said the expression and creativity of the students impressed him. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas of what peace means to them. The Lions Club is proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”
